THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM: For summer 2026, the American Research Institute in Turkey will offer fellowships for participants in the summer program in intensive advanced Turkish language at Boğaziçi University* in Istanbul. This intensive program provides the equivalent of one academic year of study in Turkish at the college level. The fellowships cover round-trip airfare to Istanbul, tuition, application fees, and a maintenance stipend.
PREDEPARTURE ACTIVITIES: Participation in the program includes 6 hours of preparation and orientation activities online.
COURSE OF STUDY: The Boğaziçi Turkish Language and Culture Program is an *intensive* language course, with four hours of classes plus lab and conversation hours each weekday. The ARIT fellowship supports the advanced study of Turkish. Class size is limited to ten students. Classes are conducted in Turkish, with informal and formal styles introduced and reviewed through classroom instruction, laboratory work, and open conversations with teaching assistants. Weekly lectures are given on various aspects of Turkish culture ranging from economics, history, literature, fine arts, architecture, and others by scholars specialized in their fields; there are weekly Turkish film sessions as well.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Full-time students and scholars affiliated at academic institutions are eligible to apply. To be a fellowship applicant, you must:
- Be a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States
- Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level academic program, or be faculty
- Have a minimum B average in current program of study; and
- Perform at the high-intermediate level on a proficiency-based admissions examination

OTHER SOURCES OF FUNDING
Critical Language Scholarships at Summer Institutes. The CLS programs support graduate and undergraduate students to participate in intensive study of Turkish at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels during the summer, 2023. Application deadline is generally mid-November.
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships. FLAS fellowships are administered through the National Resource Centers located within universities. FLAS fellowships support the study of Turkish language both in the US and in Turkey.
The ARIT Summer Fellowships for Advanced Turkish Language are sponsored by generous private donors in cooperation with Georgetown University and the American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages that also provide support for the program.
