The American Research Institute in Turkey, Inc. (hereafter ARIT) is an IRS-approved, non-profit organization incorporated in 1964 in the state of New York.

Since its founding, the mission of ARIT has been to promote North American and Turkish research related to Turkey in all fields of the humanities and the social sciences.  ARIT provides support for these aims by maintaining research centers and libraries in Istanbul and Ankara and administering fellowship programs to support advanced research in and about Turkey.

Through its fellowship programs, ARIT supports U.S.-based scholars in Turkey, Turkish researchers working in their own country and abroad, and occasionally third-country scholars.  The range of research encompassed by ARIT reflects the country’s cultural richness and diversity.

As well as facilitating individual research projects, the ARIT centers in Istanbul and Ankara promote collaborations and exchanges among scholars and institutions and develop local workshops and conferences.  In Ankara, the library focuses on the art and archaeology of Turkey and the Near East; in Istanbul the library covers primarily Byzantine and Ottoman Studies, and also holds the Library and Archives of the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions.

To advance scholarship and enhance mutual understanding between the U.S. and Turkey, ARIT develops public programming in both Turkey and the U.S.

ARIT is committed to equity, inclusion, and access in all its programs and facilities.
