The Iraqi Red List on Cultural Heritage at Risk, prepared by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 2015, illustrates Iraqi cultural materials that have been subject to theft, destruction, and smuggling. The list was translated into Turkish through a collaboration of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) with the support of the U.S. Embassy.
ICOM’s Syrian Red List on Cultural Heritage at Risk also has been translated.
A brochure on the protection of cultural heritage in Turkey has been produced as well. ARIT, with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and support from U.S. Embassy produced a pamphlet on the significance of cultural heritage and the laws against looting and illicit antiquities trade in Turkey.
The printed brochures are distributed to museums, collectors, customs, security units and all relevant stakeholders in Turkey. The pamphlets aim to expand awareness of the value of cultural heritage, the laws protecting it, and contact information for resources.
