The workshop “Islands At The Frontier Of The Empires In The Middle Ages,” held at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey was organized by the project The World of Byzantine (and Medieval) Islands. The project proposes a reassessment of the role played by the largest islands of Byzantine Mediterranean as “gateway communities” that actively and creatively promoted social contact and cultural interchange.
